IELTS EXAM – A BRIEF SYNOPSIS
IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is a criterion for evaluating the candidate’s fluency of the English Language.IELTS is worldwide by candidates for the purpose of Immigration, Employment or Overseas studies. Basically IELTS applies to the individuals of the native countries where the first language is not English. Some of the countries that accept IELTS scores are the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and Canada. Jointly owned and conducted by IDP Education Australia, British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment, IELTS comprises of four sections Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. Dates are available throughout the year and the candidates can select based on their convenience.IELTS test locations are available throughout the country and are allotted on the basis of the first-come-first-serve basis. Thus it is always advisable for the candidates to book the dates in advance and so registering for IELTS date early is a very important task.
Information and Advice to the Candidates on your IELTS Exam Day
Candidates appearing for the first time in the IELTS exam do face some jitters. Thus to enable you to get over that fear factor, here are a few guidelines that we have compiled for your day of Examination. We advise you to pay attention to these important elements for they shall assist you in understanding the key elements you should be equipped with during the IELTS Exam. Ensure to be on time for the exam. We advise you to reach the start from your place well in advance to reach 30-40 minutes prior to the examination. Verify the timings from your email and plan your travel taking into consideration the traffic backlogs and other delays during commuting. Candidates should note that they shall not be allowed to take the test if they are late. Intimation of the IELTS timings shall reach you at least three days prior to the test so as to understand what time the test starts. Candidates who have requested for special arrangements should contact the staff at the test venue six weeks prior to the test date and the arrangements shall be made for the candidates on the test date.
THINGS CANDIDATES ARE ALLOWED TO CARRY IN THE IELTS EXAMINATION HALL
Candidates appearing for the IELTS exam should ensure that they would not be allowed to carry anything to eat or drink other than a bottle of water. Ensure to have something to drink and eat before entering the hall. Usually, Listening, Reading and Writing Test is scheduled for the same day which takes a total of 2 hours and 40 minutes. There are no breaks in any of the parts of the Exam. Candidates are sent information in advance if the speaking tests are on the same day or has been scheduled for later. In order to appear for the IELTS exam, the candidates need to carry the following documents, failing which they won’t be allowed to appear for the examination.
i) ID/Identification Document
Candidate’s Passport is the only form of valid ID Identification Document accepted in the IELTS Examination. Others such as the Driving Licences, College or School ID’s are not accepted as valid proof of identification. It is a mandatory option for the candidate to carry his passport on the exam day,.along with a colour photocopy, failing which he won’t be allowed to appear for the examination and shall be marked a ‘NO SHOW’. The candidate’s photograph is taken on the test day as an additional security measure and will appear on your Test Report Form. Stay in your seat until the invigilator gives you permission to leave the room.
One should ensure however that the passport should have validity both on the booking date and the test date. Driving licenses, student IDs and other documents are not accepted as valid proof of identification.
ii) Consent Form from Parent/ Guardian if Candidate is under 18 years
The Candidate shall submit the completed consent form to the Centre on or before the date of the examination. In the event the candidate does not provide the consent Form, he shall not be admitted to the examination hall. Now, who is required to complete a Consent Form? Consent Form is mandatory for IELTS test-takers who have not yet reached the age of legal competence which is below the age of 18 years at the time of booking the test or on the test day. Consent Form has to be signed by parents during all the four sections of the Exam Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Candidate is advised to keep a copy of the document for his records.
iii)Pencil, Pen and Eraser
Candidates are allowed to Carry Pen, Pencil and Eraser in the Examination Hall. Spare sharpened pencils should be carried to the Examination Hall. Candidates should note that only pencils are allowed for Listening and Reading Examinations whereas in the writing exam the candidate can choose between the Pen and Pencil. While crossing a line through the mistakes ensure to cross it completely. Use an HB pencil to make your answers legible and easy to read.
iv) Bottle of Water
Candidate are not allowed to eat anything in between the sections of the exam. The only thing the candidate is allowed to carry with him is a transparent bottle of water.
Other than the four things listed above, the candidate is not allowed to take anything else into the test room.
Important Points during the Exam
Candidates are requested to switch off the mobile phone and any other electronic devices. All these should be placed outside the Examination Hall, usually secure area where you need to leave all your belongings. The British Council holds no responsibility for loss or damage to your personal belongings at the test venue. Therefore, we strongly recommend leaving valuables like mobile phones and computers at home. During the examination, the candidate might face issues with audibility, kindly raise your hand. In the event of any test concerns, please ask your invigilator for a Test Day Incident Form to complete. This form needs to be submitted within one week of the test date.
